The importance of correct information on the internet
Among all the things that the Internet provides, perhaps the most important is the rapid exchange of information. In addition to websites maintained by traditional news outlets, web pages, blogs and videos posted by various groups also provide us with some of the information we need. Of course, as is the case with any other information source, we should take the time to find out for ourselves whether or not it's correct.
As millions of people around the world post information online for all to see, it can be very easy to get factual information mixed in with things that are completely false. In fact, some of these falsehoods can come from seemingly reliable sources. In the not-so-distant past, there were only a few sources that compiled the world's information, and that scarcity implied a certain level of accuracy and trustworthiness.
However, the Internet has changed all that. Because it is a user-driven medium, anyone can post a video or an article and have it seen (and possibly believed) by millions of people almost instantly. Sites such as Wikipedia are a collaboration between thousands of internet users, not all of whom are experts on the subjects on which they are writing. Edits are only made after the work is posted, meaning that it is very easy for erroneous statements to slip through.
That does not mean that all online media is inaccurate; in fact, online outlets serve as "watchdogs" for conventional media services. Most online information contains clues with which people can gauge its credibility, and we no longer have to rely on a single source for all our information. Having alternate sources of news and information minimizes the chance that public opinion could be swayed by outside manipulation; that's why it's so important that the information we read online be as factual as possible.
